How I Trained My Cat to Love Her Carrier and Backpack

When I first brought home a cat carrier and backpack for my kitty Luna, I thought it would be simple. But the moment she saw the carrier, she ran under the bed. It was clear she didn’t want anything to do with it. Like many cat parents, I learned that getting a cat used to a carrier or backpack takes patience and the right approach.

Today, Luna walks into her backpack on her own—and I’d love to share how we got there.

Step 1: Make It Part of Home

At first, I left the carrier and backpack open in the living room. I put a soft blanket inside and added a few of her favorite toys. She sniffed around it for days, but I didn’t force her in. Slowly, she started napping inside. Making the carrier feel like a normal, safe place is a great first step.

Step 2: Use Treats and Positive Reinforcement

I began placing treats inside the carrier every day. When Luna went in, I praised her and gave her a few more treats. Positive reinforcement helped her associate the carrier with good things. I never closed the door at this stage—just let her come and go freely.

    Step 3: Practice Short Sessions

Once Luna was comfortable entering the carrier, I started closing the door for a few seconds, then letting her out. Slowly, I increased the time. Later, I picked it up and walked around the apartment so that she could get used to the movement. We did the same with the backpack.

Step 4: Make Travel a Calm Experience

Before our first vet visit with the backpack, I sprayed a calming pheromone inside and added her favorite blanket. I also talked to her in a calm voice. It helped more than I expected. She stayed relaxed and didn’t meow the whole ride. Now, she associates the backpack with adventure, not stress.

Helpful Tools That Worked for Us

    • Soft blankets or worn t-shirts with my scent
    • Favorite toys or treats are placed inside
    • Catnip or calming sprays like Feliway
    • Short training sessions with lots of patience

    Final Thoughts

Training your cat to love their carrier or backpack won’t happen overnight, but with time and trust, it’s possible. Luna now enjoys sitting in her backpack and even waits by the door when she sees me pack it. It’s made vet visits and outdoor walks so much easier.
